Castelo Branco, Camilo 

(full name, Camilo Ferreira Botelho Castelo Branco). Born Mar. 16, 1825, in Lisbon; died June 1, 1890, in San Miguel de Seide. Portuguese author.

Castelo Branco’s early romantic works were Agostinho de Ceuta (1851); the play Thorns and Flowers (1857); the novels Anathema (1851), Lisbon Secrets (1854), and The Black Book ofFather Dennis (1855), all of which portray the life of the urban lower class; and the autobiographical novel Doomed Love (1862). Realistic tendencies appear in the novella, A Worthy Man (1856) and his comedy of everyday life Fafe the Firstborn in Lisbon (1861) and are more clearly evident in Stories of the Minho (1875–77).
