Fort McKavett State Historic Site

Fort McKavett State Historic Site

Location: 23 miles west of Menard, in the central portion of the state.
Facilities: Picnic areas, nature trail, historic structure, park store, restrooms.
Special Features: Fort McKavett is one of five historic Texas forts designated as State Historic Sites. (The others are Fort Griffin, Fort Lancaster, Fort Leaton, and Fort Richardson.) Built in 1852, the fort was part of a new line of military posts stretching from the Rio Grande to the Red River. The site now consists of 25 restored buildings (including officers' quarters, barracks, hospital, school house, and post headquarters) and the ruins of numerous others. Interpretive exhibits trace the history of the area, emphasizing military history, the post-military community, and historic archeology.
