Didyma: see oracle oracle, in Greek religion, priest or priestess who imparted the response of a god to a human questioner. The word is also used to refer to the response itself and to the shrine of a god. Every oracular shrine had a fixed method of divination.

Didyma

Ancient sanctuary, south of Miletus in modern Turkey. Its temple, the seat of an oracle of Apollo, was plundered by the Persians c. 494 BC and resanctified after Alexander the Great conquered Miletus in 334 BC. About 300 BC the Milesians began to build a new temple, but it was never completed; the well-preserved remains were excavated in the early 20th century.
