a department of S central France, in the Auvergne region. Capital: Aurillac. Pop.: 148 359 (2003 est.). Area: 5779 sq. km (2254 sq. miles)

Cantal 

a department in France, located in the Massif Central. Area, 5, 800 sq km; population, 168, 000 (1971). Its capital is Aurillac. The main sector of the economy is agriculture. Theprincipal crops are rye, wheat, buck wheat, oats, and potatoes.Dairy farming is prevalent on mountain pastures. There is cheese production (cantal and blue cheese). Cantal has leather and wood-products industries.


Cantal 

an old cone-shaped volcano in the Massif Central in France. Elevation, 1, 858 m. The base has a diameter of 60 to 80km. Cantal was formed by Neocene eruptions during which andesites and basalts were discharged. The peak is collapsed, and the slopes are broken up into individual plateau-like sections. Vegetation is of the mountain-meadow type.

In France the circle of Cantal measures six miles across; at Ceyland the circle of the island is forty miles, which is considered the largest on the globe.
