Theprincipal crops are rye, wheat, buck wheat, oats, and potatoes.Dairy farming is prevalent on mountain pastures. There is cheese production (cantal and blue cheese). Cantal has leather and wood-products industries.

an old cone-shaped volcano in the Massif Central in France. Elevation, 1, 858 m. The base has a diameter of 60 to 80km. Cantal was formed by Neocene eruptions during which andesites and basalts were discharged. The peak is collapsed, and the slopes are broken up into individual plateau-like sections. Vegetation is of the mountain-meadow type.
