Cantwell, Robert (Emmett) (1908–78) editor, writer; born in Little Falls (now Vader), Wash. His long career in magazine publishing included editorships at New Outlook, Newsweek, and Sports Illustrated (1956–73). Best known for such proletarian novels of the 1930s as The Land of Plenty (1934), he also wrote biographies, (including lives of Nathaniel Hawthorne (1934) and the ornithologist Alexander Wilson (1961), and the historical study, The Hidden Northwest (1972).
