Wei(wā), river, c.450 mi (720 km) long, rising in SE Gansu prov. and flowing E through Gansu and Shaanxi provs. to the Huang He. Its wide, alluvial valley was the site of some of the earliest centers of Chinese civilization (such as the Chou dynasty, 1027–256 B.C.) and is now the agricultural and population center of Shaanxi prov. Cotton, wheat, millet, and fruits are extensively grown.
a kingdom in ancient China. It was formed in 403 B.C. when three noble clans, the Wei, Chao, and Han, divided the kingdom of Ching among themselves. The Wei kingdom was located in the southwestern part of the modern province of Shansi and the northern and eastern parts of the modern province of Honan. In 225 B.C, Wei was conquered by the kingdom of Ch’in.
