On southern tip of NJ, south of Atlantic City; organized Nov 12, 1692 from Cumberland County. Name Origin: For the cape, whose name commemorates Cornelis Jacobsen Mey, Dutch captain who explored the Atlantic coast of North America from Long Island to Cape May in 1612-14.

Area (sq mi): 620.28 (land 255.19; water 365.09). Pop per sq mi: 389.10.
Pop 2005: 99,286. State rank: 20. Pop change: 2000-20005 -3.00%; 1990-2000 7.60%. Pop 2000: 102,326 (White 90.00%; Black or African American 5.10%; Hispanic or Latino 3.30%; Asian 0.60%; Other 2.70%). Foreign born: 3.20%. Median age: 42.30.
Income 2000: per capita $24,172; median household $41,591; Pop below poverty level: 8.60%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $31,662-$34,386.
Unemployment 2004: 6.90%. Change from 2000: -1.30%. Median travel time to work: 23.20 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 27.80%.
