capital gains tax |
Also found in: Financial, Wikipedia | 0.03 sec. |
capital gains taxTax levied on gains realized from the sale or exchange of capital assets. Though capital gains have been taxed in the U.S. since the advent of the federal income tax, certain capital gains are taxed less heavily than regular income, while others are exempted from taxation. This preferential treatment is intended to encourage investment and thereby stimulate economic growth. In theory the tax break encourages investors to risk their capital in new ventures. Critics argue that preferential treatment results in distorted patterns of investment because regular income is converted into capital gains in order to avoid paying income tax. See also corporate income tax. |

Tax was refigured using computation from 36,339 schedule D tax worksheet or qualified dividends and capital gain tax worksheet. For estates between $5 million and $25 million per person, the estate tax rate would be the same as the capital gain tax rate (currently at 15%) and for estates at or above $25 million, the estate tax rate would be double the prevailing capital gain rate. In cases involving closely held stock with built-in capital gain, the capital gain tax potential survives the transfer of the stock to an unrelated party; Congress has not granted any relief from that secondary tax. |
