Hobart, city (1990 pop. 127,134), capital and principal port of Tasmania, SE Australia, at the foot of Mt. Wellington (4,166 ft/1,270 m high). Hobart's harbor is one of the finest in the world. The city has diverse industries, including meatpacking, food processing, and the making of textiles, chemicals, and glass. It was founded in 1804 and named for Robert Hobart, the British colonial secretary. Hobart is the seat of the Univ. of Tasmania (1890) and an important commercial and service center. The Hobart Theatre Royal (1836) is the oldest major theater in Australia.

Metal products, electric coils and transformers, herbal products, tools and castings, and processed foods are made in Hobart. City (pop., 2006: city, 47,701; urban agglom., 200,524), chief port, and capital, Tasmania, Australia. Located on the Derwent River estuary at the base of Mount Wellington, Hobart is Tasmania's largest and Australia's most southerly city. Established in 1803, it moved to its present site in 1804 and became a major port for ships whaling in the southern oceans. Its lack of natural resources limited its development. It now has a deepwater port, rail lines, and an airport, making it a centre of communications, trade, and tourism. The city is the site of Anglican and Roman Catholic cathedrals and the first Jewish synagogue in Australia (built 1843–45).

Hobart is a port on the estuary of the Derwent River near its influx into the Pacific Ocean and a transportation junction. Its industries include electrometallurgy (copper, lead, zinc, and cobalt are smelted in the suburb of Risdon), shipbuilding, motor vehicle construction, sawmilling, and processing food (canned vegetables, fruit, meat, and milk). The city has a university.
