from the 16th through early 19th century an administrative and territorial unit in Brazil (it originally was a hereditary feudal estate that representatives of the Portuguese feudal aristocracy received from the king). Capitanias also existed in other Portuguese colonies—the island of Madeira, the Azores, and the Cape Verde Islands.
