Espírito Santo

 

a state in southeastern Brazil, on the periphery of the Brazilian Highlands and in the coastal lowland. Area, 45,600 sq km. Population, 1,776,000 (1977). Vitoria is the capital of the state and its principal port. The economy is based on the export of such crops as coffee, cacao, and sugarcane. Oil is extracted and monazite sand is mined in the state. Industry includes food processing and the production of textiles.

It was conducted (a) at the headquarters of the Espirito Santo Association of Injury Reduction (Associacao Capixaba de Reducao de Danos ACARD), which conducts harm reduction work with sex workers, including trans people, in Vitoria; (b) on the campus of the Federal University of Espirito Santo (Universidade Federal do Espirito Santo--UFES) with transsexual students; (c) in the Urology Clinic of the Cassiano Antonio de Moraes University Hospital (Hospital Universitario Cassiano Antonio de Moraes--HUCAM), where gender reassignment surgeries and the clinical follow-up of patients are performed; and (d) in the home of some trans people served by ACARD.
