Espírito Santo
a state in southeastern Brazil, on the periphery of the Brazilian Highlands and in the coastal lowland. Area, 45,600 sq km. Population, 1,776,000 (1977). Vitoria is the capital of the state and its principal port. The economy is based on the export of such crops as coffee, cacao, and sugarcane. Oil is extracted and monazite sand is mined in the state. Industry includes food processing and the production of textiles.
