Larsen, Carl Anton

Born Aug. 7, 1860; died Dec. 8, 1924. Norwegian navigator and whaler.

In 1892–93 and 1893–94, Larsen made two expeditions on the ship Jason to explore the possibility of whaling in Antarctica. After sailing as far as 68°10’ S lat., he was the first to describe the eastern shore of Graham Land (Antarctic Peninsula) and entered it on a map. He also discovered several islands (Robertson and Veier). From 1901 to 1903, Larsen was captain of the ship Antarctic in O. Nordenskiöld’s Swedish expedition to Antarctica. In search of whales in 1923 and 1924, he twice penetrated into the Ross Sea and investigated Whale Bay, McMurdo Sound, and several islands. An ice shelf discovered by Larsen on the eastern shore of the Antarctic Peninsula and a mountain were named after him.
