Anderson, Carl David 

Born Sept. 3, 1905, in New York. American physicist.

After graduating from the California Institute of Technology in 1927, Anderson became an instructor there. (He has been a professor since 1939.) His main work has been in the areas of X rays, gamma and cosmic rays, and elementary particles. In 1932 he observed positrons in streams of cosmic rays. In 1936, together with the American physicist S. Neddermeyer, he discovered μ-mesons (muons) in cosmic rays. He received the Nobel Prize in 1936.
