Larsson, Carl

Born May 28, 1853, in Stockholm; died Jan. 22, 1919, in Sundborn, near the city of Falun. Swedish painter.

Larsson studied at the Academy of Arts in Stockholm (1869). He worked as an illustrator and caricaturist; he also executed frescoes and murals on historical themes (frescoes of the National Museum of Stockholm, 1894–1908). His scenes of domestic life (oils, watercolors, and etchings) were popular, and they were published in albums, including My Family (1895), The Larssons (1902), and House in the Sun (1909). Lyrical warmth, intimacy, and a somewhat idyllic joie de vivre are combined in Larsson’s work with decorative stylization in the spirit of art nouveau.
