Carlson, Evans F. (Fordyce) (1896–1947) marine officer; born in Sidney, N.Y. Service in China in the 1930s left him with a great admiration for the Communists there; he patterned his Carlson's Raiders, a famous World War II marines unit, after the Red Chinese Army. After the war, he argued forcefully for peaceful coexistence with the Soviet Union, and after his death was attacked by red-baiting Senator Joseph R. McCarthy. How to thank TFD for its existence?
