On central-eastern border of MN, south of Duluth; established May 23, 1857 (prior to statehood) from Pine County. Name Origin: For Reuben B. Carlton (1812-62), farmer and blacksmith for Ojibway Indians and MN state legislator.

Area (sq mi): 875.23 (land 860.33; water 14.90). Pop per sq mi: 39.50.
Pop 2005: 34,026. State rank: 30. Pop change: 2000-20005 7.40%; 1990-2000 8.20%. Pop 2000: 31,671 (White 91.30%; Black or African American 1.00%; Hispanic or Latino 0.80%; Asian 0.40%; Other 6.90%). Foreign born: 1.60%. Median age: 38.40.
Income 2000: per capita $18,073; median household $40,021; Pop below poverty level: 7.90%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $23,911-$25,272.
Unemployment 2004: 6.30%. Change from 2000: 0.50%. Median travel time to work: 21.20 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 31.90%.
