Carmack, George Washington

Carmack, George Washington (1860–1922) prospector; born near San Francisco. He went to Alaska in 1884 and married a Tagish Indian woman. He is credited with being the first to discover Alaska's gold in 1896. He returned to California and invested his money in mines and real estate. He abandoned his Indian wife and married a white woman around 1900.
