Carmel-by-the-Sea or Carmel (kärmĕl`), village (1990 pop. 4,239), Monterey co., S central Calif., on the Monterey peninsula and Carmel Bay, southwest of Monterey; inc. 1916. It is a tourist center and a noted artists' and writers' colony. The bay, named in 1602 by Carmelite friars in Vizcaíno Vizcaíno, Sebastián , c.1550–c.1628, Spanish explorer and merchant. After an unsuccessful attempt to plant a colony in Lower California (1596), he sailed (1602) to explore the California coast, where he discovered and named Monterey Bay.
