Carnot, Marie Francois Sadi 

Born Aug. 11, 1837, in Limoges; died June 24, 1894, in Lyon. French statesman. The grandson of L. N. Carnot.

From 1878 to 1887, Carnot was in the Freycinet, Brisson, andother governments. In 1887 he became president of the FrenchRepublic. Carnot supported the creation of the Franco-Russianalliance which was concluded in 1891–93. He was killed by theanarchist S. Caserio.
