In the north-central TX panhandle, east of Amarillo; organized Aug 21, 1876 from Bexar County. Name Origin: For Samuel Price Carson (1798-1838), signer of the TX Declaration of Independence (1836) and secretary of state of the Republic of TX (1836-38).

Area (sq mi): 924.10 (land 923.19; water 0.91). Pop per sq mi: 7.10.
Pop 2005: 6,586. State rank: 192. Pop change: 2000-20005 1.10%; 1990-2000 -0.90%. Pop 2000: 6,516 (White 90.60%; Black or African American 0.60%; Hispanic or Latino 7.00%; Asian 0.10%; Other 5.40%). Foreign born: 2.70%. Median age: 38.90.
Income 2000: per capita $19,368; median household $40,285; Pop below poverty level: 7.30%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $26,917-$24,829.
Unemployment 2004: 4.20%. Change from 2000: 1.40%. Median travel time to work: 21.40 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 57.40%.
