Carter, James Coolidge (1827–1905) lawyer; born in Lancaster, Mass. Throughout 52 years with Davies & Scudder in New York, he defended the evolution of common law, and in 1871, helped prosecute "Boss" Tweed. A founder—and for nine years president—of the National Municipal League and a president of the American Bar Association, he was U.S. chief counsel in the Bering Sea controversy (1893). |
