Carter, Robert “King” (1663–1732) colonial official, landowner; born in Lancaster County, Va. He served in the Virginia Assembly (1691–92, 1695–99) and the Council (1699–1732). A large landowner himself, he became the agent for the wealthy Fairfax family in 1702 and used his position to become one of the wealthiest men in the colonies.
