Carter, Robert “King” (1663–1732) colonial official, landowner; born in Lancaster County, Va. He served in the Virginia Assembly (1691–92, 1695–99) and the Council (1699–1732). A large landowner himself, he became the agent for the wealthy Fairfax family in 1702 and used his position to become one of the wealthiest men in the colonies. His political and economic position earned him the title of "King Carter" or "King Robin."
