Carter Caves State Resort Park Location: 5 miles northwest of I-64 Exit 161 (Olive Hill). Facilities: 28-room fieldstone lodge, 10 cottages, 96-seat dining room, 2 group camping buildings, 89 campsites with utilities, restrooms, and showers, 9-hole regulation golf course, public swimming pool (free to lodge and cottage guests), picnic areas, 2 picnic shelters, playgrounds, hiking trails (26 miles), multi-use trail (10 miles), horse stable and rental concession, 18-hole miniature golf course, 2 tennis courts, meeting facilities, welcome center, gift shop. Activities: Camping, swimming, fishing, boating (no motors), guided canoe trips, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, guided trail rides, golfing, tennis, guided cave tours. Special Features: Park features more than 20 caverns, including Cascade Cave, with an underground waterfall 30 feet high, and X Cave, which features luminous stone fans, pipes, and spirals. Bat Cave (the largest cave in the park) is the winter home to thousands of rare bats and is shown only during the summer.
