In south-central OK, southeast of Lawton; organized Nov 16, 1907 from Chickasaw lands. Name Origin: For Charles David Carter (1868-1929), U.S. representative from OK (1907-27); or possibly for Benjamin Wisnor Carter, a Cherokee Indian, soldier in the Confederate army, and OK territorial judge.

Area (sq mi): 833.72 (land 823.79; water 9.93). Pop per sq mi: 57.20.
