He soon faced disputes over confused land titles and rebellion by tenant farmers against quitrents (fixed rents). After the division of New Jersey in 1676, he was made governor of East Jersey. Mounting difficulties with Sir Edmund Andros Andros, Sir Edmund (ăn`drŏs), 1637–1714, British colonial governor in America, b. Guernsey. ..... Carteret, Philip (1639–82) first governor of New Jersey; born in Isle of Jersey, England. After arriving at Elizabethport (1665) he instituted a government and summoned the first New Jersey legislature (1668).
