Cartwright, William, 1611–43, English author and divine. An ardent royalist and disciple of Ben Jonson Jonson, Ben, 1572–1637, English dramatist and poet, b. Westminster, London. The high-spirited buoyancy of Jonson's plays and the brilliance of his language have earned him a reputation as one of the great playwrights in English literature.

, he had a high reputation as a preacher and author. In addition to his poems, which are now almost entirely forgotten, Cartwright wrote plays, of which The Ordinary (1635?) and The Royal Slave (1636) were the most successful.
