In south-central MN, east of Minneapolis, established Feb 20, 1855 (prior to statehood) from Hennepin County. Name Origin: For Capt. Jonathan Carver (1710-80), an officer in the French and Indian War, explorer, and author.

Area (sq mi): 376.15 (land 357.04; water 19.11). Pop per sq mi: 237.70.
Pop 2005: 84,864. State rank: 11. Pop change: 2000-20005 20.90%; 1990-2000 46.50%. Pop 2000: 70,205 (White 94.40%; Black or African American 0.60%; Hispanic or Latino 2.60%; Asian 1.60%; Other 1.90%). Foreign born: 3.40%. Median age: 33.90.
Income 2000: per capita $28,486; median household $65,540; Pop below poverty level: 3.50%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $38,913-$40,807.
