Casilear, John William (1811–93) painter; born in New York City. He studied with Asher B. Durand (1831), became a banknote engraver, traveled in Europe (1840–43 and 1857–58), and worked in New York (1854). He specialized in Hudson River School scenes, as in Lake George (1857).
