On the central southern border of ID, east of Twin Falls; organized Feb 20, 1879 (prior to statehood) from Oneida County. Name Origin: For Cassia Creek (spelled Cassier in 1879), named either from French cajeaux 'raft,' for for James John Cazier, member of the Mormon Battalion and a colorful wagon train leader. Locals also believe it is for the cassia plant.

Area (sq mi): 2580.31 (land 2566.45; water 13.86). Pop per sq mi: 8.30.
Pop 2005: 21,324. State rank: 15. Pop change: 2000-20005 -0.40%; 1990-2000 9.60%. Pop 2000: 21,416 (White 79.30%; Black or African American 0.20%; Hispanic or Latino 18.70%; Asian 0.40%; Other 14.90%). Foreign born: 7.30%. Median age: 31.10.
Income 2000: per capita $14,087; median household $33,322; Pop below poverty level: 13.60%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $21,576-$23,551.
Unemployment 2004: 6.00%. Change from 2000: 0.50%. Median travel time to work: 16.30 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 26.60%.
