Castillo de San Marcos National MonumentHistoric site, northeastern Florida, U.S. Established in 1924, it is the 25-acre (10-hectare) site of the oldest masonry fort in the U.S., built by the Spanish (1672–95) to protect St. Augustine. The fort played an important role in the Spanish-English struggle for the Southeast (c. 1670–1763). In the 19th century it served as a U.S. military prison. Special Features: Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest masonry fort and best-preserved example of a Spanish colonial fortification in the continental United States. It was originally built (1672-1695) by the Spanish to protect Saint Augustine, the first permanent settlement by Europeans in the continental United States (established in 1565), and was for many years the northernmost outpost of Spain's vast New World Empire.
