On the central northern border of NC, northwest of Durham; organized Apr 8, 1777 (prior to statehood) from Orange County. Name Origin: For Gen. Richard Caswell (1729-89), Revolutionary War officer; first and fifth governor of NC (1775-79; 1784-87).

Area (sq mi): 428.43 (land 424.67; water 3.76). Pop per sq mi: 55.60.
Pop 2005: 23,608. State rank: 76. Pop change: 2000-20005 0.50%; 1990-2000 13.60%. Pop 2000: 23,501 (White 60.60%; Black or African American 36.50%; Hispanic or Latino 1.80%; Asian 0.20%; Other 2.30%). Foreign born: 1.60%. Median age: 38.20.
Income 2000: per capita $16,470; median household $35,018; Pop below poverty level: 14.40%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $21,635-$21,200.
