crystal detector [′krist·əl di′tek·tər] (electronics) A crystal diode, or an equivalent earlier crystal-catwhisker combination, used to rectify a modulated radio-frequency signal to obtain the audio or video signal directly. A crystal diode used in a microwave receiver to combine an incoming radio-frequency signal with a local oscillator signal to produce an intermediate-frequency signal.
