In west-central NC, northwest of Charlotte; organized Dec 12, 1842 from Lincoln County. Name Origin: For the Catawba Indians of Siouan linguistic stock who lived in the area and were recognized as the most powerful tribe; origin of name unknown.

Area (sq mi): 413.51 (land 399.97; water 13.54). Pop per sq mi: 379.10.
Pop 2005: 151,641. State rank: 13. Pop change: 2000-20005 7.00%; 1990-2000 19.70%. Pop 2000: 141,685 (White 82.10%; Black or African American 8.40%; Hispanic or Latino 5.60%; Asian 2.90%; Other 3.80%). Foreign born: 6.50%. Median age: 36.10.
Income 2000: per capita $20,358; median household $40,536; Pop below poverty level: 9.10%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $27,478-$26,483.
Unemployment 2004: 6.60%. Change from 2000: -0.10%. Median travel time to work: 20.70 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 15.60%.
