Catawba RiverRiver, southeastern U.S. Rising in North Carolina's Blue Ridge, it flows south into South Carolina, where it becomes the Wateree River. It is 220 mi (350 km) long. With the Wateree, it forms an important source of hydroelectric power for South Carolina. |

Beginning in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, the Catawba River flows for 225 miles into Lake Wateree, east of Columbia, South Carolina. Not all the Catawbas, of course, live on the reservation, which stretches along the cliffs of the Catawba River in eastern-most York County and looks more like a series of hardscrabble farms than a community. Raw water supply from Duke Energy Company reservoirs on the Catawba River, is plentiful and well-protected. |
