Caterpillar Tractor Tread
a closed continuous band or chain of articulated connected links used in a Caterpillar drive. Depressions or lugs on a Caterpillar tractor tread’s inner surface interact with the machine’s driving wheels. The outer surface is fitted with lugs that provide friction with the soil. Caterpillar treads can be metal, rubber and metal, or rubber. Metal treads with separable or non-separable links are the most widely used. To increase the wear resistance and service of Caterpillar tractor treads, their links and connecting elements (pins and sleeves) are made of a special high-manganese steel that has been subjected to heat treatment.
