On the central western border of NM, southwest of Albuquerque; organized Feb 25, 1921 from Socorro County. Name Origin: For Thomas Benton Catron (1840-1921), Confederate officer during the Civil War and U.S. senator from NM (1912-17).

Area (sq mi): 6929.03 (land 6927.81; water 1.22). Pop per sq mi: 0.50.
Pop 2005: 3,409. State rank: 31. Pop change: 2000-20005 -3.80%; 1990-2000 38.20%. Pop 2000: 3,543 (White 75.80%; Black or African American 0.30%; Hispanic or Latino 19.20%; Asian 0.70%; Other 11.30%). Foreign born: 1.60%. Median age: 47.80.
Income 2000: per capita $13,951; median household $23,892; Pop below poverty level: 24.50%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $14,377-$16,303.
Unemployment 2004: 7.50%. Change from 2000: 0.70%. Median travel time to work: 25.00 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 16.70%.
