On the northeastern border of ND, northwest of Grand Forks; organized Jan 4, 1873 (prior to statehood) from Pembina County. Name Origin: For either Charles T. Cavileer (1818-1902), an early white settler and public official (with the spelling changed to seem French); or Rene Robert Cavalier, Sieur de la Salle (1643-87), the explorer.
