Cech, Thomas R. (1947– ) biochemist; born in Chicago. At the University of Colorado (1977) he showed that RNA could have an independent catalytic function, aiding a chemical reaction without being consumed or changed. This discovery had major implications for genetic engineering as well as for understanding how life arose. He and Sidney Altman shared the Nobel Prize in chemistry (1989). |
