On northeastern border of MD, west of Wilmington, DE; organized 1674 from Baltimore and Kent counties. Name Origin: For Cecilius Calvert, 2nd Lord Baltimore (1605-75), founder and first proprietor of the colony of MD, though he never visited it.

Area (sq mi): 417.88 (land 348.13; water 69.75). Pop per sq mi: 280.90.
Pop 2005: 97,796. State rank: 12. Pop change: 2000-20005 13.80%; 1990-2000 20.50%. Pop 2000: 85,951 (White 92.50%; Black or African American 3.90%; Hispanic or Latino 1.50%; Asian 0.70%; Other 2.00%). Foreign born: 1.80%. Median age: 35.50.
Income 2000: per capita $21,384; median household $50,510; Pop below poverty level: 7.20%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $28,240-$30,201.
Unemployment 2004: 4.30%. Change from 2000: -1.40%. Median travel time to work: 28.20 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 56.10%.
