Celaya (sālä`yä), city (1990 pop. 214,856), Guanajuato state, W central Mexico. In a region watered by the Lerma irrigation works, Celaya is the center of a prosperous corn, cereal, and bean growing area. Cattle raising and the associated dairy industry are also important. Founded in 1571, Celaya was frequently involved in Mexican wars. It was the first city to be captured (Sept. 28, 1810) by Hidalgo y Costilla. In 1915, Álvaro Obregón decisively defeated Francisco Villa at Celaya.
Celaya 

a city in central Mexico, in Guanajuato State. Population, 143,700 (1970). Celaya is an important transportation center in the Lerma River basin. Products from the Bajío, an extensive agricultural region that grows grains, primarily wheat, vegetables, fruits, and oil plants, are processed in the city. Celaya also has a chemical industry.

In addition to the full integrated steel making facility at Lazaro Cardenas, next to Arcelor Mittal's Lazaro Cardenas works, the acquisition includes Metaver, a mini-mill, Sibasa and Camsa, two rolling mills in Celaya, Guanajuato (Sibasa) and Tultitlan, State of Mexico as well as Border Steel, a mini-mill in Texas, USA.
