Celsius Scale a temperature scale in which the interval between the melting point of ice and the boiling point of water at standard atmospheric pressure (101,325 pascals, or 760 mm Hg) is divided into 100 parts. The Celsius scale was named after the Swedish scientist A. Celsius (1701–44), who proposed it in 1742. On the Celsius scale, the temperature is expressed in degrees Celsius (°C), a temperature of 0°C is assigned to the melting point of ice, and a temperature of 100°C is assigned to the boiling point of water.
