Centenary State Historic Site Location: 4 blocks off LA 10, at East College and Pine streets in Jackson. Facilities: Historic buildings, exhibits, restrooms, trails, picnic area. Activities: Guided tours, interpretive programs. Special Features: Once the site of Centenary College, which originally opened in 1826 as the College of Louisiana, the school was closed during the Civil War. Its buildings were used by both Confederate and Union troops, and for a time the dormitories served as a hospital. Although the college reopened after the war, it never regained its former prosperity and later moved to Shreveport, where it remains today. The West Wing dormitory and a professor's cottage are the only buildings of the original college still standing, and these have been preserved to interpret the history of higher education in Louisiana. Address: 3522 College St Jackson, LA 70748 Phone: 225-634-7925; Phone: 888-677-2364; Web: www.crt.state.la.us/parks/icentenary.aspx Size: 40 acres. See other parks in Louisiana.
