Central Lowlands

lowlands in Scotland that separate the Highlands and the Southern Uplands. The Central Lowlands consist of strips of flat country formed by red sandstone, shale, and limestone, which have been covered with a morainal mantle that alternates with monadnock ridges and hills, mainly of ancient igneous rock. There are coal deposits. The densely populated Clyde River valley runs through the region. The vegetation consists of pine forests, birch forests, and, along the ridges and hills, heather. Glasgow and Edinburgh are located in the Central Lowlands.
