Cermak, Anton (Joseph) (1873–1933) mayor; born in Kladno, Bohemia. He came to the U.S.A. as an infant. He started his working life as a coal miner, and eventually became a prosperous businessman. A power in Chicago Democratic politics, he served four terms as a state legislator, beginning in 1903, as well as other state and city offices. Elected mayor of Chicago in 1931, he was killed in 1933 by a gunman aiming at President-elect Franklin Roosevelt as they were riding in a car in Miami, Fla. How to thank TFD for its existence?
