Prado, Chávez Jorge del 

Born Aug. 15, 1910, in Yanahuara, Arequipa Department. A figure in the Peruvian labor movement. Journalist.

Prado worked as a miner and an artist. In 1929 he became a member of the Peruvian Communist Party (PCP). He was first secretary of the Peruvian Communist Youth League. In 1931 he became a member of the Central Committee (CC) of the PCP, and during the years 1931–34 he served as organizational secretary of the party committee in Lima. From 1935 to 1938, Prado was the official who was responsible to the CC for the work of the party committee in Cuzco. Imprisoned between 1938 and 1941, he began working in the party’s department committees in Lima and Arequipa in 1941. In 1942 he became a member of the political commission and secretariat of the CC of the PCP. Prado was general secretary of the CC of the PCP from 1946 to 1948 and executive secretary of the party committee in Arequipa in 1949.

Prado spent the years 1951–56 in emigration. From 1956 to 1958 he served as secretary of the CC of the PCP and from 1958 to 1962 he was editor in chief of the newspaper Unidad, the central organ of the PCP. Because of the arrest in 1960 of the general secretary of the CC of the PCP, Prado served as executive secretary of the CC for several years. In November 1966 he became general secretary of the CC of the PCP. He has been arrested many times. Prado has written works on the labor and trade union movements, including a textbook on trade union work.
