Cheng Yior Ch'eng I(born 1033, Henan, China—died 1107, Henan) Chinese philosopher who, with his brother Cheng Hao, developed Neo-Confucianism into an organized philosophical school. Cheng Yi's stern morality led him to decline high office and criticize those in power. He was twice censured and pardoned. Similar to his brother, he based his philosophy on the concept of li (basic truths). However, while Cheng Hao emphasized the importance of meditation, Cheng Yi stressed investigation of material things and human behaviour. Cheng Yi's realism was developed further by Zhu Xi.
