Chabas, Paul Émile (pōl āmēl` shäbäs`), 1869–1937, French academic painter. He is remembered chiefly for his nude, September Morn, which created a sensation when it was exhibited in 1912. It was sold to a Russian, hidden during the Russian Revolution, and in 1935 rediscovered in a private collection in Paris. It is now owned by the Metropolitan Museum.
