Chadwick, Henry (1824–1908) sportswriter, baseball executive; born in Exeter, England. After immigrating to the U.S.A. at an early age, he became a sportswriter for the New York Times in 1856 and wrote some of the earliest articles about baseball, which included his modern version of a baseball box score. For the next fifty years, he wrote prolifically about the game, served on rules committees, compiled official statistics, and published books on baseball. Known as "The Father of Baseball," he was elected to baseball's Hall of Fame in 1938. How to thank TFD for its existence?
