Chagres River

Chagres River

River, Panama. Rising in central Panama, it is part of the Panama Canal system and flows southwest where it is dammed to form Gatún Lake. It drains northwest out of the lake and into the Caribbean Sea.

The Chagres River, one of the few rivers to flow into both the Atlantic and the Pacific, was dammed and the huge Gatun Lake formed 85 feet above sea level.
The Chagres River Dam created the reservoir of Gatun Lake in order to provide more water to the Panama Canal.
The Nature Conservancy has been working in the Chagres River Basin and the Chagres National Park for some time.
