Chagres RiverRiver, Panama. Rising in central Panama, it is part of the Panama Canal system and flows southwest where it is dammed to form Gatún Lake. Last year, more than 500 people bought stock in another controversial project--a US$25 million resort overlooking the Chagres River where it feeds the Panama Canal. Panama has already created two national parks around the Rio Chagres river that feeds the canal, and conservationists would like to see much more of the zone protected as parkland. |
